Frequent Asked Questions!!!!
How much does it cost to build a buggy?
Many
people ask this question. I am not sure there is a perfect answer but I will
tell you. It could be as little as a few hundred dollars or a lot more. I
would suggest that you decide how much you have to spend on the project and
work within that budget. I have seen too many projects start out with
greater expectations than the builder's wallet can afford. A buggy that is
drivable is more fun than a buggy sitting in the corner of the garage!
What
should I know before I build my buggy!
You
should be mechanically inclined or have a qualified person help you with the
project. You should be comfortable with the equipment and tools that you
will be using so that you do not injure yourself or anyone helping.
Where
can I get parts for my buggy?
I
would check local for a buggy parts supplier before venturing out over the
Internet. I would compare prices and see if it is worth the shipping and
handling charges. I like to buy parts at swap meets and look for old junk
beetles. A beetle is a great starting point because it will give you the
front end, rear end, engine, transmission, front and rear suspension,
torsion and steering.
What
type of tube do I use?
You want to use a seamless drawn over mandrel tubing otherwise called
(D.O.M) with a diameter of 1.5" and a wall thickness of .095. Do
Not Use any type of water pipe, conduit or exhaust pipe. These all look
similar but have different chemical properties. If you are unsure ask your
local metal supplier. You want to use a grade equal or greater in quality
than that used in frame and roll cage building.
How
do I make my Dune Buggy Road Legal?
You
will have to contact your local ministry of transportation office. You will
need to know the safety or licensing requirements for your state or country.
Where
can I get the equipment and the tools to build the frame?
Check
your local phone book for equipment rental places. You can rent welders and
benders for a fraction of the price it cost to buy one. The frame could be
built in a day if you plan and use your time wisely
What
size motor should I use?
I only
recommend that you start out with a Volkswagen type 1-beetle motor. This has
got to be one of the most interesting motors to work with. It has the
ability to produce enough power to get your buggy around stock or could be
modified to make enough power to be a screaming banshee. I have bought
motors for as little as $25 and have had them run!!!! What a great find!!!!
